Experiential Learning Through Internship and Field Visit

Objectives of the Practice

  • To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in legal studies.
  • To provide students with hands-on experience in real-world legal settings such as courts, law firms, NGOs, and corporate legal departments.
  • To enhance students’ understanding of the legal system, court procedures, and legal documentation.
  • To develop skills in research, client interaction, legal drafting, and case analysis, thereby improving employability.
  • To foster a professional work ethic and a deeper understanding of social justice issues through field visits to legal aid centers and marginalized communities.

The Context Public

The evolving legal profession demands not only strong theoretical foundations but also practical skills and real-life exposure. RV Bidap Law College, situated in a semi-urban area, recognized the need to complement classroom learning with experiential learning opportunities. The challenge was to provide diverse and quality experiences in the form of internships and field visits, considering resource limitations and geographical constraints. The initiative aimed to overcome these barriers and provide students with an enriched learning experience.

The Practice

  • Internship Program: : The college facilitates internships with local law firms, district courts, NGOs, and corporate legal departments. Internships are offered during semester breaks and are designed to expose students to various aspects of legal practice, including case preparation, court procedures, legal research, and client interactions.
  • Field Visits: Organized field visits to courts, jails, legal aid centers, and institutions like the State Human Rights Commission. These visits allow students to observe proceedings, interact with legal professionals, and understand the functioning of the legal system.
  • Mentorship and Supervision: Faculty members guide students throughout the internship and field visits. Regular feedback sessions are conducted to discuss students’ experiences and address any challenges faced.
  • Legal Aid Activities: Organized field visits to courts, jails, legal aid centers, and institutions like the State Human Rights Commission. These visits allow students to observe proceedings, interact with legal professionals, and understand the functioning of the legal system. The college encourages participation in legal aid camps and street law programs to provide free legal advice to underprivileged communities, promoting social responsibility among students.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Students are required to submit internship reports and field visit reflections. These are assessed for academic credit, with evaluations based on their engagement, learning outcomes, and application of legal principles.

Evidence of Success

The legal aid activities conducted as part of the field visits have helped resolve several legal issues for underprivileged communities, enhancing the college’s role in promoting social justice.

ICT Enhanced Teaching-Learning Process (LMS, MOOCs, PPT, Quizzes)

Objectives of the Practice

  • To integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into the teaching-learning process for improved student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • To enhance students’ access to diverse learning resources, including Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
  • To promote interactive learning through digital tools such as PowerPoint presentations (PPT) and online quizzes.
  • To facilitate blended learning approaches, combining traditional classroom methods with digital resources for a comprehensive educational experience.
  • To prepare students for the digital age by equipping them with essential technological skills needed for their professional and academic growth.

The Context Public

With the rapid advancement of technology, traditional methods of teaching are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of modern students. RV Bidap Law College recognized the necessity of adopting ICT to make learning more engaging, accessible, and effective. The challenge was to integrate ICT tools into the curriculum while ensuring that both students and faculty members were comfortable and skilled in using these technologies. Given the semi-urban location of the college, it was also important to address issues such as internet connectivity and access to digital devices.

The Practice

  • Google Classroom Learning Management System (LMS): The college introduced an LMS platform to facilitate online course delivery, content sharing, and tracking of students’ progress. Faculty members upload lecture notes, e-books, assignments, and recorded lectures to the platform, making resources accessible to students anytime, anywhere.
  • MOOCs: Students are encouraged to enroll in MOOCs on platforms like SWAYAM, Coursera, and edX to complement their coursework with global perspectives and specialized topics. Credits earned through MOOCs are considered for academic credit as per the university’s guidelines.
  • PowerPoint Presentations (PPT): Faculty members use PPTs during lectures to present complex legal concepts in a simplified and visual format.
  • Interactive Quizzes: Online quizzes and tests are regularly conducted using digital tools like Google Forms to assess students’ understanding of topics covered.
  • Blended Learning: A combination of traditional classroom teaching with ICT tools is adopted, where digital content supports in-person discussions, encouraging a more dynamic and engaging learning environment.
  • Faculty Training: Workshops are conducted to train faculty in using ICT tools effectively. The college also encourages faculty members to participate in Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) focused on ICT in education.

Students have developed essential digital literacy skills, which are crucial for their academic growth and future careers.
